Details

Are men with mental health problems as equally engaged in creative activities as women? Our research for this report found very little data on gender in creative mental health and mixed practitioner experiences and views (although the picture for the workforce is clearer).

The final report compiles what research and data there is, alongside the views of experienced practitioners and case studies from the field. These include both men-only projects and organisations who have been successful at creating gender balanced groups. The examples are diverse and include:

  • Arts 2 Heal in Blackburn and their experience engaging men from the local Muslim community;
  • Fabrica in Brighton who run a Men’s Shed, one of 1,100 Sheds across the UK;
  • Lightpost Theatre Company, a project for young Black men, originally set up by the Birmingham Rep;
  • Our Room in Manchester, a creative community for male, trans & non-binary people who sex work; and
  • Restoke, who run Up Men, a multi artform programme for men in Stoke-on-Trent.
