Funding unchained: an activist approach to unlocking LGBTQI leadership in West Africa

Caroline Kouassiaman, ISDAO

International Development

Caroline is the first Executive Director of ISDAO (Initiative Sankofa d’Afrique de l’Ouest), a new activist-led grant-maker for LGBTI communities in West Africa.

The arrival of ISDAO is an exciting development for LGBTI activism in sub-Saharan Africa. While the movement has been growing in strength across the continent, growth has been less strong in West Africa, with space for civil society activity heavily restricted.

Caroline wrote this blog for philanthropy magazine, Alliance, on the occasion of ISDAO’s first-ever grants round.
