This new series of podcasts by Tyne & Wear Archives and Museums (TWAM) is designed to support museums and heritage professionals to set up creative programmes in mental health and addiction settings.

Last week, Tyne & Wear Museums launched a set of podcasts designed to support heritage and museum professionals setting up creative and heritage programmes in mental health and addiction recovery settings.

Called Practising Mindful Practice, the series covers:

  1. Values and co-design
  2. Collections and clinical care
  3. Clinical environments
  4. Staff wellbeing
  5. Creativity and data
  6. Legacies

Occupational therapists, psychotherapists, mental health specialists, museum and gallery professionals, freelance artists, academics and those with lived experience of addiction recovery are among those sharing knowledge and expertise in interviews across the podcast series.

Artwork for the series was created by members of North Tyneside Art Studio (NTAS), a local visual arts studio for people with mental health problems.

Clara Shield, Assistant Outreach Officer and Wellbeing Programme Lead at Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums, said:

“We hope that heritage professionals will find the Practising Mindful Practice podcast useful, meaningful and thought-provoking. We’ve created it to support both those who are new to mental health and addiction recovery work, and those who have already started their journey and want to develop it further.

“Soon each podcast episode will have a downloadable crib sheet covering the key areas discussed, along with a glossary of terms and list of references to related websites, articles, publications and organisations.”

The series was commissioned by the Baring Foundation and follows our report last year on museums and mental health called Creatively Minded at the Museum.
