The independence of civil society and the role that it plays is of central value to the Baring Foundation. We were one of five funders that supported the Sheila McKechnie Foundation and Civil Exchange to research the views of voluntary sector organisations on threats to the freedom of the sector and wider society. Defending Democratic Space – A Call to Action is the resulting report. We have previously funded other reviews most recently, Independence in question – the voluntary sector in 2016.
