The Inquiry (Civil Society Futures) is a two-year project funded by a group of independent foundations to explore the future shape and role of civil society in England.

Civil Society Futures is providing, through community events, academic research and online debate, an opportunity for those involved in all forms of civic action – from informal networks to vast charities – to share their views about how civil society should contribute and how it can flourish in a fast-changing world.

It has published a first report, which highlights the key elements from the background research that stand out as underpinning the possibilities for the future.

The Inquiry is chaired by Julia Unwin, former Chief Executive of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, supported by an independent panel of experts with a wide range of perspectives from theatre to business to local government. Secretariat support is provided by Forum for the Future, openDemocracy, Goldsmiths University and Citizens UK.
